I developed a phobia about using my 35mm. Everyone had one. I felt self-conscious, intrusive. The Widepan II is a ridiculous large format, panoramic film camera, an oversized Mickey Mouse toy which elicits a completely different response from the subject. Everyone takes notice. In that moment of shared surprise and acknowledgement, the subject and camera become the event. The images are distinctive in their style: cinematic, revealing multiple narratives in a combination of the contrived and the unpredictable. They have an intimacy and a breadth, contrary to widepan's conventional formal static landscapes. In an age of digital hegemony, my widepan viewpoint seeks to distance itself from production-line standardisation and capture a unique, unrepeatable moment.
Shot with Widepan Pro II 140 on FP4 film. Digital scan and printed on Hahnemuhle William Turner [1016mm X 1524 mm] 310gsm, 100% cotton.
